about

A bit over a week ago, a friend challenged me to write a song a day. I'm still working on recording and tweaking most of them, but I wanted to wish a happy Passover to those who celebrate, so here's a quick recording I did of a song I wrote for my extended family's Zoom seder (Zeder).

In the chorus, I mention 337, my grandparents' address where the seder has taken place for the past several years (it was at their old house before that — they're unbelievably gracious hosts). While there are usually 30-50 guests in 337, this year we had most of those folks on Zoom instead. It was a different kind of seder than we're all used to, but it was wonderful to celebrate the holiday any way we could.

Traditions may evolve, but at least they're there.

Chag sameach!

lyrics

the seder plate is ready with all its components
and i’m here with my family but still feeling a bit lonely
so i turn on the computer and enter the meeting code
and there in brady-bunch-style are so many people i love

we’re doing the best we can on zoom
counting the plagues in many different rooms
next year we’ll be at thirty-three seven
the year after that in jerusalem

there’s no kids table and no hopping plastic frogs
and it’s only april but this year has been a slog
it may seem like there’s no freedom on this holiday
but listen to my song and what i have to say

we’re doing the best we can on zoom
counting the plagues in many different rooms
next year we’ll be at thirty-three seven
the year after that in jerusalem

don’t take for granted this large group we have
even though it’s virtual, it’s not all that bad
we’re safe at home, we’re eating food, we’re saying all the prayers
traditions mays evolve, but at least they’re there

we’re doing the best we can on zoom
counting the plagues in many different rooms
next year we’ll be at thirty-three seven
the year after that in jerusalem

we’re doing the best we can on zoom
counting the plagues in many different rooms
next year we’ll be at thirty-three seven
the year after that in jerusalem
